The package contains individual nettles for dioramas and vignettes in 1:48 scale. The plants are separated from the sheet, shaped and planted into finished terrain. The manufacturer is the Czech company Model Scene, a specialist in diorama vegetation and scenery materials. It is not a kit but a scenery accessory. The name gives a range of 1:45 and 1:48.
The nettle is a perennial herb with an upright square stem and opposite serrated leaves. It grows in dense continuous stands on soils rich in nitrogen – that is exactly where people have left their mark: behind barns, by dung heaps, around fences and walls, in ditches, on waste ground and in abandoned gardens. For a modeler it is one of the most useful plants of all, because its presence immediately tells the story of a place that was inhabited and then abandoned. Unlike most weeds it does not form individual clumps but a closed stand.
Plant nettles in denser groups along lines – by a wall, a fence or a ditch – not scattered over an open area. It is the continuous band that looks credible. Bend the leaves and turn them to the sides so that the growth does not read as flat. Glue with cyanoacrylate into pre-drilled holes or with PVA glue on a soft scenery base, and cover the base with a scatter. Combine them with the weeds and burdock of the same range, which have a different leaf shape – a mix of species is what makes growth convincing. In terms of color, keep the nettles in a richer, darker green than the surrounding grass.
This is a scenery accessory, not a model kit. The glue, the paints, the base and any further material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
