The DSPIAE PT-TH02 PRO WING tungsten steel scriber

This pull-type scriber from the PRO WING line serves for scribing and restoring panel lines. According to the designation the edge is of tungsten steel, that is of a material that keeps its edge longer than ordinary tool steel.

What the tool is for

Panel lines on injection-molded parts tend to be shallow, and after filling and sanding there is often nothing left of them. The scriber is drawn toward the body, scrapes the material out and leaves a groove with sharp edges into which a wash then flows well. The same tool can mark out drainage grooves, add the gap around a hatch or complete a line that abrasive paper has interrupted. The difference from the point of a needle is that a scriber removes the material instead of pushing it out to the sides.

Working with a scriber

• always draw the tool toward you, never away
• make the first strokes light and add depth gradually
• guide the groove along a template or taped-down strip
• remove the displaced material from the edges afterwards
• protect the edge from striking a hard surface

Color coding within the line

The color given in the name separates the individual forms of the line from one another so that they can be recognized at a glance in the toolbox. The tool belongs in the hands of a modeler who already has a steady stroke and knows when to stop, since scribed lines are hard to put right afterwards. It is therefore worth devoting the first attempts to a spare part from the sprue and only then moving to the piece being built.
