A partial accessory set aimed at the crew shield of the German 88 mm antiaircraft gun in the Flak 37 version, in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit but an accessory for the Italeri or Tamiya plastic kit. It is precisely with a shield that photo-etch makes the most sense: the real armor plate was a fraction of a millimeter thick in 1:48 scale, whereas injection-molded plastic has to be several times that. A metal part therefore gives the difference away at once on a finished model, above all when the edge of the shield is seen from the side.
On the eighty-eights the shield was fitted where fire against ground targets was expected and where the crew were at risk from fragments and from small-arms fire. It was not part of every piece, and in purely antiaircraft emplacements it often went unused. The weapon itself grew out of the Flak 18 and 36 series; the Flak 37 version differed chiefly in its equipment for the remote transmission of gun-laying data.
The plate of the shield is a large flat area, and so work with it carefully: once metal has been made wavy it is hard to straighten. Make the bends and the flanges on the straight edge of a hard object or in a bender, not between your fingers. Brief annealing over a flame helps, after which the metal softens and takes the shape better. Glue the shield to the model with super glue in gel form, which gives you time to set it upright and symmetrically. Paint over a primer, in a thin coat; on a large area every unevenness and every fingerprint shows. Credibility is helped by a slight suggestion of scuffed edges and fine weathering in the lower part.
This is an accessory set, not a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
