1:48 A6M1/ 2/ 3 Nat. Ins. w/ o white outline from Dead Design covers insignia without a border, meant for the early Mitsubishi A6M Reisen in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set is meant for the simplest form of the Japanese national insignia: the red disc alone, with no light ring around it. Zeros wore this form in the first months of the Pacific fighting, when the light gray-green finish set the insignia apart well enough on its own.
The A6M series began with the A6M1 prototype, the A6M2 with folding wingtips for carrier elevators gave it its production form, and the A6M3 then tried first a clipped and later again a lengthened wing. The designer Jiro Horikoshi built the whole concept on saving weight down to the last gram, which gave the machine a range that the fighters of the day could only dream of, but at the same time denied it both armor and self-sealing tanks.
Without a border the work is a step shorter, but the base plays a greater role. The light early scheme of the Zero is favorable for red: the disc comes out rich even with thin coats and you do not need to put as heavy a white intermediate coat under it as on dark camouflage. On the fuselage the insignia lies partly across the rivet lines, so go over the perimeter of the mask with a toothpick before spraying and press it down into the engraving. And because only one color is sprayed, lift the mask right after the last pass, while the film is still flexible.
