A masking set from MH models in 1:48 scale for a model of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2 carrier fighter. The set is aimed at the recognition stripes and the elements of the markings, which are sprayed in paint with the templates. It is not a kit and not a set of decals. A sprayed stripe follows the shape of the airframe exactly and does not wrinkle over the edges of the control surfaces and the transitions, where a decal causes the greatest trouble; on top of that it has no visible carrier film edge.
The A6M2 was the basic version of the Japanese carrier fighter with a radial Nakajima Sakae engine, famous for its range, rate of climb and agility. Those qualities were achieved by an exceptionally light structure, which came at the expense of the toughness of the airframe. The colored stripes and bands on the tail surfaces and the fuselage were used on the type to tell machines, squadrons and formations apart quickly, so they belong among the elements by which a model is most readily recognized.
Finish the model in its base coat and let it cure. Seat the template and press it down all round the outline; on stripes across curved surfaces work from the center toward the edges, so that the film does not stand proud anywhere. Cover the surroundings with tape and paper. Spray the paint in several very thin coats perpendicular to the edge of the mask. Light shades need an intermediate coat of white over dark camouflage, because otherwise they do not cover. Take the masking off shortly after it has dried, still before the finish has fully cured. Small imperfections are put right with a fine brush, and a final varnish evens out the sheen.
This is a masking set, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
