An accessory set from AMMO of Mig Jimenez containing, according to its name, two AGM-45 Shrike antiradiation missiles in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft model or a kit: it is armament that the modeler hangs under the wing or fuselage of a finished model to complete a credible combat configuration. The set therefore makes sense above all as an accessory for a kit already bought.
The AGM-45 Shrike was an American antiradiation missile, that is a weapon homing on the emissions of a hostile radar. It came about by reworking the airframe of an older guided air-to-air missile, received a new passive seeker head and became the first weapon of its kind in series service. It was carried by machines intended to suppress air defenses and it appeared under the wings of a whole range of US Navy and Air Force types. Its weaknesses were the narrow tuning of the seeker and the loss of guidance the moment the crew switched the radar off; even so, it fundamentally shaped air combat tactics and remained in service for decades.
Before fitting, check the alignment of the pylons and remove any casting remains. It proves worthwhile to paint the missiles separately from the aircraft and to hang them only at the end, so that the fragile fin surfaces are not damaged. A primer will unify the surface, and contrasting colored bands will come out once a gloss varnish has been laid down before the decals.
