A resin detail set from Metallic Details in 1:48 scale. It replaces or completes the sensor turret on the nose of the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and is done in the later configuration, which differs from the early one in the shape and the layout of the covers. The set is cut for the Academy kit in 1:48 scale, so it seats on it without major work. It is not a helicopter kit: it is a separate accessory that assumes you already have the base model.
The sensor package on the Apache nose consists of two rotating units. The lower one houses the TADS target acquisition and designation system, the upper one the PNVS night vision sensor, whose image is projected into the pilot's field of view. This turret is the most prominent part of the whole airframe and the one the eye follows most, which is why detail sets concentrate on it. Injection-molded kit parts tend to be simplified here: they lack the small frames, the optics covers and the fine panel gaps that a resin casting can capture.
The parts are cast in resin, so first wash them in warm water with detergent and remove any traces of mold release agent; neither glue nor paint will hold on a greasy surface. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a knife, never snap them off, and then level the surfaces with sandpaper. Do not inhale the resin dust; ideally sand wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, optionally with an accelerator for faster setting. Apply a primer before painting to even out the surface and secure adhesion. We recommend masking the optics and finishing them last.
This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
