A group of four 1:48 AIM-9B Sidewinder missiles from AMMO of Mig Jimenez completes the armament of American fighters of the 1950s and 1960s.
Responsibility details are not available.
The accessory set from the Spanish brand AMMO of Mig Jimenez offers, according to its name, four pieces of the AIM-9B missile, that is the very first production version of the famous Sidewinder. It is hung on a finished fighter model and replaces the simplified armament that boxed kits tend to have.
The Sidewinder was created at a US Navy test station in California and its strength lay in its simplicity. The uncooled infrared seeker head reacted to the hot exhaust of a jet engine, so an attack had to come from behind and preferably against a clear sky. The B version entered service in 1956 and only two years later, over the Taiwan Strait, it scored the very first confirmed kills with an air-to-air guided missile. It was carried by the F-86, F-100, F-104 and the early Phantoms and was also built under license in Europe. Its recognition marks are the long narrow forward canards and the rollerons on the tips of the rear surfaces, which damped the rolling of the missile about its long axis.
Finish and paint the missiles separately and hang them on the pylons only then. Work with an airbrush and with the training bands of the markings is incomparably easier that way. Check what material the parts are made of and reach for the matching glue accordingly. Watch the symmetry of both mountings and the identical angle to the long axis of the fuselage, otherwise the whole model looks askew.
