About product

Single-sided masking set 1:48 B-26B-50 Invader (Art Scale)

A self-adhesive masking set from Art Scale intended for a model of the twin-engine Invader in 1:48 scale. The masks are supplied pre-cut to their final shape, so there is no laborious cutting to a template and no laying of strips of adhesive tape directly on the model. The designation single-sided means that the set covers the outer side of the clear parts; the inner surfaces of the framing are touched in with a brush or left in the interior shade. It is an accessory for the ICM kit; the box contains neither the model nor the paints.

What masking solves

Hand-cut tape almost always wrinkles somewhere on broken-up glazing and paint runs under it. A pre-cut mask sits on the outline of the frame, holds a straight edge along its whole length and the result is repeatable even on sets with a great many small panes.

The real subject

The Douglas Invader was a twin-engine attack bomber with piston radial engines, an all-metal structure and tricycle landing gear. Machines with a solid, unglazed nose carried gun armament in the forward fuselage and were intended for attacks on ground targets. The type stayed in active service for a long time after 1945 and saw a number of modernizations, thanks to which it appears in a wide range of color schemes from bare metal to dark covering finishes.

Applying, spraying and lifting off

Wash the clear part first in lukewarm water with detergent, let it dry and do not touch it with your fingers. Lift the mask off the backing with tweezers, seat it along the outline of the frame and press it down with a blunt toothpick, above all along the whole edge, because that is where the paint runs. Spray several very thin coats; one heavy coat runs under sooner than three light ones. It works well to spray the edges of the mask first in the interior shade or in clear varnish, which seals any leaky edge. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, lift it with the tip of a scalpel and pull at an angle rather than straight off the surface.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Invader in 1:48 scale who want sharp framing without cutting by hand
  • Beginners for whom masking glazing is the most demanding part of the build
  • Builders who spray the cockpit with an airbrush and need a reliably tight edge
  • Anyone who wants to save time on the broken-up glazing of a multi-seat aircraft

The box holds masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included.

FAQ

No. It is a masking set, that is, an accessory for a kit. The model itself, the paints and the glue are not in the box.

The masks are intended for the outer side of the clear parts. The inner side of the framing is touched in with a brush or stays in the interior shade. The double-sided version deals with the inside as well.

No. The masks are cut to the outlines of a particular kit in 1:48 scale, and the target model is given in the name. They need not line up on the parts of another manufacturer.

Shortly after the paint has dried. If you leave it on the model too long, it comes off less easily and may tear the edge of the finish away.
