A 1:48 decal set for two Superfortresses: a machine from Okinawa in 1951 and an aircraft with the triangle S marking of the 40th Bombardment Group.
Responsibility details are not available.
The sheet brings together two periods of the same type. The first subject is a machine of the 25-MO production series with the name The Outlaw, which in 1951 flew with the 28th Squadron of the 19th Bombardment Group from a base on Okinawa. The second is an aircraft of the 85-BW series bearing the name Celestial Queen and a triangle marking with the letter S, of the kind the 40th Bombardment Group used within the 58th Bombardment Wing as late as 1945.
The pair shows the change the bomber force went through in only six years. Whereas during the Second World War geometric markings on the vertical tail surface served for quick identification of whole formations over Japan, the Korean era already worked with more restrained markings and with aircraft in bare metal. From one sheet a modeler can therefore choose which chapter to devote himself to.
The temperature of the water decides: with sheets holding large areas water of around thirty degrees proves itself. A hot bath releases the glue too quickly and the motif wrinkles; a cold one, on the other hand, extends the soaking so much that the paper has time to dry out. After transferring, leave the part undisturbed until the next day.
The fin surface of a Superfortress is tall and flat, so an error in the position of a marking shows on it at once. I recommend marking the position beforehand with a fine pencil from the drawing and only then sliding the motif off the paper into place. Soak the excess water off with a piece of tissue laid against the edge, not by wiping across it.
