A set of shaped masks for the windscreen, the hinged middle section and the fixed rear part of the glazing of the Bf 109E-3 fighter in 1:48 scale.
The E-3 version was among the most widespread Emils of the period of the fighting over France and the Channel. Compared with the earlier form it carried cannons in the wing instead of a pair of machine guns, which meant a harder burst but also a smaller supply of ammunition and a slower rate of fire. A supercharged engine gave the machine good performance at higher altitudes and a rate of climb its opponents long had no answer to. Its weakness remained its range, which over southern England limited the time over the target to a few tens of minutes, and the narrow track of the landing gear, which cost a number of machines on landing.
The glazing of the Emil looks like a rewarding object to mask: nothing but straight lines and flat panes. The catch lies in their number and width. There are many frames, they are conspicuously wide and they run in several directions, so measuring out the individual strips takes longer than the whole rest of the spraying. The hinged middle section also opens to the side, so every inaccuracy is visible in profile on a finished model. Pre-shaped pieces shorten that step to fitting them and pressing the edge down.
