About product

A clear canopy without cross frames and the armor behind the head

The late Bf 109 versions received a new blown canopy known as the Erla Haube. The cross frames disappeared from it and only the rim around the edge remained, so the view to the sides and rearward improved at a stroke. For the modeler that means everything will be visible through the canopy, including the massive armor plate behind the pilot's head.

On this type that plate is a recognition feature and it stands right in the line of sight. For it to stand out, the glazing around it must be without a single haze and the narrow rim must be the same width on both sides. The set allows for that and offers two glazing masks prepared for the outer and the inner face.

Two national insignia masks come with them. The crosses on the fuselage of late machines were often simplified to an outline alone, and thin shapes like that are easier to spray than to apply, because carrier film cracks readily at the edges.

The G-10 was built in the last year of the war as an attempt to get the most out of the design. It had an engine with additional power boosting and a modified engine cowling, and it is often confused with the similar-looking K-4 version. The differences are small and lie mainly in the bulges on the nose.

Blown canopies take only gentle pressure, so the mask is laid on without stretching and the edges are smoothed down step by step. After spraying it is better to remove the film in good time, while the paint is only touch-dry, so the edge does not tear away with the color.

The cut matches the Hasegawa kit in this scale. The package contains masks only. Plastic parts and paints do not belong with them.

FAQ

It has no cross frames, only a rim around the edge, so it is more transparent and the view rearward is considerably better. On the model that makes the whole cockpit visible.

A narrow rim must be the same width on both sides, otherwise it looks crooked. Covering the inner face ensures that and the glass surface stays free of haze.

The set is cut for the Hasegawa Bf 109G-10 in 1:48. Similar versions have differently shaped parts, so use on another designation cannot be assumed.
