Masks for the late Messerschmitt Bf 109G-10 in 1:48 scale. Covering of the cockpit from both sides plus two national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The letter after the slash on this G-10 does not stand for an improvement but for rationalization. A stronger powerplant with higher boost pressure, a lightened sliding canopy without a cross brace, an enlarged wooden vertical tail and bulges over the wheels. Several works were assembling the machines at once out of whatever was at hand, though, so two aircraft with the same designation could have a different cowling and a different window behind the pilot's head. For the modeler that is a trap and an opportunity at the same time, because there simply is no single answer to the question of how it looked. The finishes of that period underline it: an older shade often showed through the hastily applied mottled camouflage, and the paints were mixed from whatever was left in the store.
The cockpit is covered from both sides and two outlines for the national insignia are prepared with it. The films are cut to the Fujimi kit.
Even a perfectly laid film leaves a slight step behind. In 1:48 scale it is as wide as the frame itself, and in raking light it casts a shadow that looks coarse on a finished cockpit. Go over the edge with a polishing sponge of the finest grit, only two or three strokes along the frame, without pressure. The step levels out, the sheen drops and the frame blends optically with the glass. Polishing makes sense only after full curing, that is not sooner than two days; the grit digs into a soft film and leaves a matte trace you then have to spray over anyway.
