An injection-molded plastic kit of the German Messerschmitt Bf 109G-4 fighter in 1:48 scale from the Czech firm Eduard of Obrnice near Most. Eduard is among the manufacturers who have built a whole model range around the Bf 109, and their molds in this scale are now one of the benchmarks of quality among modelers. The particular make-up of the box and the range of color schemes are given by the manufacturer in the instructions.
The Bf 109G-4 belongs to the early part of the so-called Gustav series. It grew out of the G-2 version, with which it shares the Daimler-Benz DB 605 A engine and the unpressurized cockpit, but it differs above all in its radio equipment and in the enlarged main wheels, which called for the characteristic bulges on the upper surface of the wing. The armament consisted of a 20 mm cannon firing through the propeller hub and a pair of machine guns above the engine; the 13 mm heavy machine guns that became the recognition feature of the later Gustavs were not yet on this version. The G-4 served from the winter of 1942 and 1943 on the Eastern Front and in the Mediterranean, and a reconnaissance conversion came out of it as well.
Once the fuselage is closed, the cockpit of the Bf 109 is visible only through a narrow opening, and yet it pays to give it time, because it carries most of the detail that catches the eye on the finished model. Glue the fuselage halves with a thin cement for plastic and check the joint dry before fixing it. Apply a primer before painting; it unifies the surface and reveals any unevenness. German fighter camouflage of this period rests on soft transitions between shades of gray and on the mottling along the sides of the fuselage, so an airbrush at low pressure and thinned paint in several thin layers pay off. Lay a gloss clear coat under the decals, overcoat with a matte one once it is dry, and only then add the panel lines and the chipped paint at the wing root.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
