About product

What the set offers

A photo-etched fret is a thin metal sheet with an etched pattern from which the parts are cut out, bent and glued onto the model. Metal holds its shape even in a thickness that injection-molded plastic cannot reach, which is why photo-etch pays off wherever the material is meant to be genuinely thin in scale. The set is listed for a model of the Bf 109G-6 in 1:48 scale. Which elements the fret carries, where they belong on the model and which kit it is cut for is stated in the maker's instructions.

The real subject

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the main German fighter aircraft of the Second World War and the G series formed its most numerous production group. You can tell the G-6 version at a glance by the two prominent bulges on the upper part of the nose, which were called for by the armament housed ahead of the cockpit. Otherwise the machine stayed true to its original shape: a slender fuselage, a narrow wing and a landing gear with a narrow track that made life hard for pilots on takeoff and landing. On an aircraft this small the fine metal parts are worth it, because the cockpit and the interior surfaces sit close to the eye on the finished model.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Work over a light surface and on a hard backing; if a part flies out of the tweezers, you will search for it in vain on a dark board. Separate the parts with a sharp blade, not with scissors and certainly not by snapping them off. Make the bends in several steps rather than in one sharp move. They are glued with a minute amount of super glue, which can be dosed with a pin or a piece of wire. Degrease the metal before spraying and use a primer, otherwise the coat will chip off during further handling.

  • glued with super glue, not with polystyrene cement
  • degreasing and a primer before painting

FAQ

A photo-etched metal fret for a model of the Bf 109G-6 in 1:48 scale. The list of parts and their placement is stated in the maker's instructions.

The item designation does not state it; you will find it in the instructions of the maker of the set. Photo-etched sets are made to fit one particular kit and need modifications on any other.

A sharp blade, a hard backing, tweezers with fine jaws and a photo-etch bending tool or at least a hard edge. Dose the super glue with a pin.

That depends on the version of the set, which the instructions state. If they are painted, degrease the metal first and use a primer so that the coat holds.
