About product

The BMW 132 in 1:48 scale (Metallic Details)

A resin engine set from Metallic Details in 1:48 scale. It captures the German air-cooled BMW 132 radial engine, which powered a number of civil and military aircraft of the 1930s and 1940s. The set replaces the simplified engine from an injection-molded kit and suits anywhere the powerplant is open to view. It is not an airplane kit but an accessory to a model you already own.

The real subject

The BMW 132 is a nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engine that grew in Munich out of the license-built American Pratt & Whitney Hornet and was gradually reworked into a design of its own. It was built in many versions differing in fuel system and output. It is best known as the powerplant of the three-engine Junkers Ju 52/3m transport, but it appeared on other types of the period as well. Technically the interesting parts are the even ring of nine finned cylinders, the circle of valve pushrods in front of them and the hub with the propeller reduction gear - precisely the features an injection mold can never hold in full sharpness.

Building and painting tips

Wash the castings in warm water with detergent to remove the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutter and level the mating surface with abrasive paper, so that the engine sits straight in the nacelle or in the cowling. Sand wet and protect your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and on larger surfaces the gel version pays off, because it gives more time for alignment. Apply a primer before painting. The cylinders look best in a dark metal shade with a dark wash between the fins, while the crankcase tends to be lighter; a final pass of drybrushing on the edges of the fins gives the engine depth.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German aircraft of the interwar and wartime era in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want an exposed cowling or an open nacelle
  • Makers of dioramas with aircraft maintenance and servicing
  • Modelers with experience of resin parts

This is a detail accessory, not a stand-alone model. The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

If you are building the three-engine Junkers Ju 52/3m, the number of pieces is stated on the box.

It is best known as the powerplant of the Junkers Ju 52/3m transport, but other German types of the 1930s and 1940s used it as well. The name does not give the particular version of the engine.

Modeling cement for plastic does not work on resin. Use cyanoacrylate glue, the gel version on larger mating surfaces, and degrease the surfaces beforehand.

Yes. Mold release agent is left on the castings and the paint would hold on it unreliably. Warm water with detergent and a soft brush are enough.
