An installation of the bombardier's station in the nose of the Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress in 1:48 scale, prepared for the classic kit of the Monogram brand.
Responsibility details are not available.
The glazed nose of the Flying Fortress was not an observation cabin but a station in its own right. A bombsight fitted into it, along with a navigation table with maps, an instrument panel, oxygen lines, distribution boxes and side gun windows, and in the middle of all that two men had to turn around in a flying suit and gloves. The B-17F version differed from the later G precisely here: it did not yet have the chin turret under the nose, so the glazing stayed clean and uncovered and everything inside was visible from outside.
The set reckons with the 1:48 Monogram kit, that is with a mold that has decades of production behind it. Its fidelity of shape is still decent today, but the internal equipment of the nose corresponds to the time it was created and looks schematic against present-day demands. A replacement installation evens that difference out, and the open glazing finally makes sense with it.
The installation is fitted before the fuselage halves are glued together, otherwise you will not get inside. It therefore pays to try everything dry several times in advance and to sand down any overhang, because once it is glued a repair is out of the question. It is sensible to paint piece by piece and to fit only at the end.
