The photo-etched set from the Metallic Details brand is intended for working up the waist gunners' area on a model of the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the airplane, but an accessory that replaces simplified plastic parts with fine metal elements. You buy the base model separately.
The waist gun positions are visible through the open windows on a model and are among the most prominent visual places of the whole fuselage. Injection-molded plastic runs into its limits here: floor gratings, consoles, ammunition box holders and window frames come out thick-walled in a kit. Photo-etched sheet has a thickness that matches reality far better in 1:48, and gratings and grillework suddenly look like sheet metal parts rather than plastic blocks.
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engined heavy bomber with radial engines and extensive defensive armament. The B-17F and B-17G versions differed from one another mainly in the forward fuselage, with the G receiving an additional lower turret under the cockpit. On the later series the waist gun windows were offset in relation to one another, so that the pair of gunners did not get in each other's way. It is to these areas that the set belongs.
Nip the photo-etched parts off the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface or with cutters intended for photo-etch. Level the remains of the tabs carefully with a fine file or a sanding sponge, otherwise the part will not seat. Make the bends along the etched grooves, ideally in a photo-etch bending tool or between two razor blades. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied on the tip of a wire, so that the fine details are not flooded. Degrease the metal and spray it with a primer before painting, because without it the paint rubs off the smooth brass surface during handling alone.
The set is an accessory for building a model, not a standalone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
