Full-color instrument panels with a relief surface for the torpedo bomber of RAF Coastal Command; the artwork follows the ICM mold.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Bristol Beaufort Mk.I was created at the end of the 1930s as a twin-engine torpedo and reconnaissance machine for RAF Coastal Command. It was powered by Bristol Taurus radial engines and an aerial torpedo fitted into the bomb bay. The best-known episode of the type remains the attack on the battlecruiser Gneisenau in the port of Brest in the spring of 1941, for which the pilot Kenneth Campbell was awarded the highest British decoration for gallantry posthumously.
This part replaces the flat suggestions on the molding with a full-color main panel and side panels. The dials have their faces, needles and bezels printed, while the domed covering gives the impression of glass. They are supplemented by levers, switch boxes and labels of the kind that are only painted with difficulty at this scale.
The Beaufort was moreover the design basis for the more famous Beaufighter, with which it shared a substantial part of the fuselage. For a long time it was a type that could not be built in good form at all, so it pays to take the newer kit to the last detail.
Advice on fitting. Sand the original molded dials smooth first, otherwise the new surface will not seat and bubbles will stay under it. Paint the base in a dark matte color, let it cure overnight and only then transfer the panels. A drop of gloss varnish on each dial imitates glass better than any other trick.
The artwork is prepared for 1:48 and in size comes from the ICM kit. The cockpit of the Beaufort can be seen into through extensive glazing, so work with a full-color panel shows in the result more than with machines that have a narrow canopy.
