About product

Resin propeller with the Finnish VL spinner for the Bristol Blenheim, 1:48 scale

An accessory for modelers, not a kit of the aircraft. The set holds parts cast in resin that replace the original propeller on a Bristol Blenheim model with a version carrying a Finnish-made VL spinner. Resin castings render the shape of the blades and the fine surface detail more crisply than an injection mold allows, and in the case of a propeller they also solve the difference in shape that building a Finnish machine calls for. The accessory is supplied by the SBS Model brand.

The real subject

The Bristol Blenheim was a British twin-engine bomber which in the second half of the 1930s was a fast all-metal monoplane for its day. Besides the Royal Air Force it was used by a number of other countries, and among the best known foreign users was the Finnish Air Force, which operated the type for many years. Finnish machines differed from British ones in, among other things, their equipment and small items of domestic production; the abbreviation VL in the name of the set refers to the Finnish state aircraft factory that supplied such parts.

Usage tips

First wash the resin parts in warm water with detergent, so that the mold release agent is removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw, and go especially carefully on the thin propeller blades. Sand the remains down with respiratory protection, ideally wet. It is glued with cyanoacrylate; polystyrene cement has no effect on resin. Apply a primer before painting. With propellers it pays to check that the blades are set symmetrically before the glue sets, as any unevenness shows at once on a finished model.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of Blenheims in Finnish service in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers for whom the propeller from the original mold is not enough
  • Anyone interested in the less usual foreign users of British equipment
  • More experienced builders with experience of resin parts

The accessory is supplied unpainted and is not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. Please check the fit with your kit before buying.

FAQ

It is not. It is a resin accessory, specifically a replacement propeller. The kit of the aircraft has to be bought separately.

It makes it possible to build a Blenheim in Finnish service, where a spinner of domestic production was used. For British machines the ordinary propeller from the kit is the right one.

Wash the mold release agent off them, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand them down with respiratory protection, ideally wet. They are glued with cyanoacrylate.

The number of parts is stated on the box. The Blenheim is a twin-engine aircraft, so please check the number of pieces before buying.
