This injection-molded plastic kit from the German manufacturer Revell captures the Cessna O-2A Skymaster observation aircraft in 1:48 scale. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Because another manufacturer also issues the same type in this scale, go by the brand name given in the name of the item when choosing; this kit is from Revell.
The O-2A is the military version of the civil Cessna 337 Super Skymaster. Its most conspicuous feature is the tandem arrangement of two piston engines: one tractor in the nose, the other a pusher at the rear of the central nacelle. Thanks to that the aircraft has no asymmetric thrust if one engine fails, which was rare among twin-engine machines of the period. It carries its tail surfaces on a pair of booms. The aircraft served mainly for observation, reconnaissance and passing on information about the situation on the ground; it flew slowly, low and for a long time, helped in that by a glazed cabin with a very good view downward. Under the wings it could carry light external stores, marker rockets for instance.
The glazing is crucial: the cabin is large and the inside is in view, so finish and paint the interior before the fuselage is closed, and mask the windows carefully. Glue the tail booms with the model standing on a flat board, otherwise the tail easily ends up twisted; check the alignment dry. Leave the propellers until last. On the joints use a thin liquid cement applied by capillary action. Spray a gloss varnish before the decals. Keep the weathering restrained; machines of this type tended to be stained from the exhausts and from dust, but this is not hardware that would carry heavy mud effects.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
