An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from PM Model. The subject is the Cessna T-41, the military trainer version of the well-known light high-wing monoplane, boxed with the markings of the Turkish Air Force. Trainers are thinly represented in the kit range, so this is a welcome addition to a collection alongside combat types. The number of parts and the extent of the decal sheet are given on the packaging.
The T-41 is based on the civilian four-seat high-wing monoplane with fixed landing gear and wing struts, one of the most widespread light aircraft of all. In military service it was used as a machine for basic flight training: thanks to undemanding handling and low operating costs, students flew their first hours on it before moving on to more powerful trainers. Besides the US Air Force, other air arms used it in this role as well. Characteristic features are the large glazed area of the cabin and the high-set wing, which opens up the view downward for the pilot.
The cabin is the key part of this model: practically the whole interior is visible through the large windows, so it pays to paint the seats, the instrument panel and the floor before you close the fuselage. Mask the glazing with precisely cut strips or with a ready-made mask, because hand-painted frames show immediately on an area that large. Glue the wing struts on last and preferably all at once, so that the wing sits without twisting, and check the symmetry from the front while the cement is setting. Leave the propeller free to turn or glue it on only after painting. Color schemes of trainers tend to be simple, which makes a smooth, even finish stand out all the more, ideally sprayed.
