A stand-alone resin figure in 1:48 scale. The casting is a portrait, that is modeled on one particular person with recognizable features. From anonymous figures it differs in what its effect rests on: it is carried by the head and the silhouette, not by the gear. What is described here is solely the casting and how it is worked.
A portrait figure takes being displayed on its own better than a figure intended for a crowd. In 1:48 a standing figure measures roughly three and a half centimeters, which is too little to carry a large area and too much to be lost, so a small plinth and the smallest possible surroundings pay off. If, by contrast, you bring it into a scene, watch that it does not compete with another striking figure: two recognizable faces in one composition take attention from each other. Recognizability is the main value of the casting here, so protect it with the lighting as well: stand the figure so that the light falls from above and slightly from the side and the face gets a shadow under the brim of the headgear. Even frontal light smooths the features out and the portrait is lost.
The casting block tends to be under the soles; cut it off with a fine-toothed saw and level the mating surface with a file. Scrape the parting line along the sides and across the arms with a scalpel held flat, and with a portrait figure leave the head until last and work on it carefully, because one deeper scratch across the face ruins the casting. Before painting, wash the casting in lukewarm water with detergent and apply a thin primer, ideally a light one, so that the skin shades can be built up on the face without losing brightness. Paint the face in layers from the base tone through the shadow to the highlights, with a brush with a small point. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and sand wet and with respiratory protection.
