This is a classic kit of injection-molded plastic, which the modeler cleans up, assembles and paints himself. Among fighter aircraft, 1:48 scale is one of the most popular: the model is large enough for the panel lines, the landing gear bays and the shape of the air intakes to come into their own, and at the same time it fits into an ordinary display case. The number of parts, the contents of the decal sheet and the number of color schemes are given in the data on the packaging.
The J-20 is a Chinese single-seat twin-engine fighter aircraft designed with an emphasis on reduced radar signature. A canard configuration is typical of it, with smaller horizontal surfaces sitting ahead of the delta wing, as are a pair of canted vertical tail surfaces and side air intakes. It carries its main armament in internal bays in the fuselage, which helps to keep the outer outline clean. The prototype first flew at the start of 2011 and the machine entered line service several years later. The individual production batches differ in their powerplants as well as in details of the airframe.
Separate the parts from the sprue with a photo-etched knife or with nippers and sand the sprue nubs down, so that no bump is left on the leading edge of the wing. Large aircraft have long joints on the fuselage and the air intakes, so it is a good idea to sand the joint down once the glue has dried and to fill it if needed, so that no visible line is left. Paint and accent the cockpit and the landing gear bays before the fuselage is closed. Mask the glazing and paint it only at the end. A gray camouflage with a hint of blue comes out well when you break the area up by lightening the centers of the panels slightly and then unify it with a translucent veil of the base shade. Lay a gloss varnish under the decals and matte the layer down once it has dried.
