Trainers tend to be an overlooked subject for decals, and yet it is on them that the most interesting combinations of warning stripes, lettering and colored areas appear, meant to raise the visibility of the aircraft in training use. This sheet concentrates on two-seat trainer Cougars and offers markings for a model in 1:48 scale. It is published by Furball Aero-Design, an American specialist in decals for naval aviation, whose sheets are marked by thin carrier film and accurate color registration.
The Grumman F9F Cougar was a carrier jet of the US Navy with a swept wing, which came about by reworking the earlier straight-wing Panther. The two-seat trainer version F9F-8T received a lengthened nose with a cockpit for two pilots in tandem and became the Navy's standard advanced trainer. In 1962 it was redesignated TF-9J as part of the unification of designations, so both designations belong to one and the same aircraft.
Before applying decals, let the paint cure for at least a day; fresh finish softens under a damp decal and a mark is imprinted into it. Go over the area with gloss clear. Trim the decal as close to the artwork as possible and soak it in warm water for a few seconds, then let it rest on paper until it releases by itself. Seat it on a dampened spot, draw the excess water off with the edge of a paper tissue and let it dry without touching. Finally unify the surface with clear in the degree of sheen you want.
This is a decal sheet, an accessory for a kit you already own. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
