About product

de Havilland DH.89 Dragon Rapide (1:48, Armory)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the manufacturer Armory, capturing the elegant British twin-engine biplane airliner de Havilland DH.89 Dragon Rapide. The boxing presents the aircraft in the Rothmans Devils color scheme. This is a short-run kit: the parts have no locating pins and are attached to the sprue by heavier gates, so the build calls for careful cleanup and a more experienced hand. Besides the plastic sprues the box usually holds a clear part for the glazing, small photo-etched items and painting masks for the canopy; check the exact contents on the particular box.

The real subject

The Dragon Rapide was created in the mid-1930s as a comfortable and economical short-haul airliner for small airlines. It was powered by a pair of de Havilland Gipsy Six inline engines and the cabin held about six to eight passengers. A mixed wood-and-fabric structure with its characteristic tapered wings made it one of the most successful British light transport aircraft of its day; it served with airlines, in training and in military liaison and school roles.

Building and painting tips

Count on the bracing wires between the wings: get stretched filament or rigging line ready, along with a fine drill for the holes in the struts. Bond the parts with liquid cement for plastic, fill the seams with putty and sand them down. Apply a primer before painting; an airbrush and good masks make the clean transitions of the scheme easier. Mask the glazed cabin with the enclosed shapes and glue it in only after the frames are painted.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers with experience of short-run kits.
  • For fans of British interwar aviation and civil airliners.
  • For builders who enjoy rigging a biplane.
  • For collectors in the popular 1:48 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather not. It is a short-run kit without locating pins and with heavier sprue gates, so it calls for careful cleanup and at least intermediate experience. On top of that you have to manage the rigging of a biplane.
