About product

Reskit 1:48 De Havilland Vampire wheels set type 2 - a set of wheels

This item is a detail accessory in resin, not a model of an aircraft. It replaces the landing gear wheels on a model of the early Vampire jet in 1:48 scale. The words type 2 in the name refer to a variant of the wheel form - the manufacturer offers several numbered versions for the same aircraft, because the hubs and the tires differed between individual production series and operators. Before buying we therefore recommend comparing the illustration on the packaging with photographs of the machine you are building. The number of parts in the package is given on the packaging.

The real subject

The De Havilland Vampire was a British single-engine first-generation jet with a characteristic layout: a short fuselage nacelle with the cockpit and the engine, a pair of booms running backwards and between them a horizontal tail joining the two fins. This layout means that the landing gear is visually unobstructed and the wheels are visible from most angles. The aircraft served in many countries and in a range of versions, including two-seaters, so small differences in equipment including the landing gear are common on it.

Usage and painting tips

Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water because of the release agent from the mold. Cut the casting block off with a saw and level the mating surface by sanding wet on a flat support. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). For the tire choose a dark gray shade, and for the hub go by the documentation for your machine - on aircraft of this generation both bare metal and painted hubs appear. The transition between the hub and the rubber can be managed with a circular mask. On a jet operated from paved surfaces choose more restrained weathering than on machines from grass airfields: light dark picking out of the tread and fine light dust on the sides of the tire are enough. If the castings carry a suggested settling of the tire, turn them so that the flat part faces down.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the De Havilland Vampire in 1:48 scale
  • Those who need a particular wheel variant for their machine
  • Builders bothered by the mold parting line on plastic wheels
  • Anyone interested in early jets and their detailed treatment

The accessory is supplied unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It refers to a variant of the wheel form. The manufacturer offers several numbered versions for this aircraft; how they are told apart is described on the packaging of the set.

Compare the illustration on the packaging with photographs of the particular machine and production series you are building. The differences tend to be in the hub and in the tire tread.

It is not. This is only a set of wheels in resin; the Vampire model has to be bought separately.

On a jet from paved surfaces rather restrained - dark picking out of the tread and fine light dust on the sides of the tire.
