This sheet from the Hungarian manufacturer HAD models brings the civil markings of an An-2 operated under the banner of the Hungarian carrier Malév. It is a decal sheet in its own right, meant for finishing a replica in 1:48 scale that is already built and varnished, not a kit. A civil scheme is a rewarding change from the usual military finishes in which the An-2 is most often built.
The An-2 is a single-engine biplane with a large-area wing, a radial engine and a celebrated ability to take off and land on short, unpaved ground. It came about as a general purpose machine for carrying passengers and freight, for agricultural work, for air ambulance flights and for parachute training. It was built over decades in large numbers and in civil service it flew in many countries of central and eastern Europe, Hungary among them.
A civil finish stands or falls on a smooth, glossy base, so go over the model with gloss clear coat before the decals. Lay the long stripes along the fuselage on in sections and keep smoothing them down, so that the film does not ripple. On a biplane take care that the struts and rigging do not get in the way while you settle the design, and ideally lay the decals on before the bracing is fitted. Finally unify the surface with a varnish of the degree of sheen you want.
