About product

Do-335A bomb bay photo-etched set in 1:48 scale

This item is not an aircraft kit but a photo-etched detail set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard. It consists of parts etched from thin metal sheet with which the internal bomb bay on a plastic model of the Dornier Do 335 A in 1:48 scale is detailed. Injection-molded plastic can only suggest such a bay roughly, because the walls have to have a certain thickness for molding. Photo-etch, by contrast, is a fraction of a millimeter thin, so the stiffeners, the ribbing and the small mechanisms look far more believable in miniature.

The real subject

The Dornier Do 335 Pfeil was a twin-engine aircraft with an unusual powerplant arrangement. One engine worked at the front with a tractor propeller, the other was mounted behind the cockpit and drove a pusher propeller at the end of the fuselage. The tandem solution gave the aircraft the power of a twin without the aerodynamic losses that engine nacelles in the wing bring. The A series version had an internal weapons bay in the lower fuselage, so it did not have to carry its load on external racks under the airframe.

How the photo-etched parts are fitted

The parts are separated from the fret with a sharp knife or a scalpel on a hard surface, never with nippers. The bends come out more accurately in a photo-etch bending tool; at a pinch two razor blades and a steel rule will do. They are bonded with super glue applied on the tip of a toothpick; on larger areas slower-setting epoxy proves useful, as it gives time to align the part. It is good to degrease the place the photo-etch will go and to remove the original molded detail beforehand. It pays to treat the metal with a base coat before painting, otherwise the paint holds badly on the smooth surface. Printed parts, if the set contains any, are not overpainted.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to have the bomb bay open and to let the viewer look inside
  • Builders bothered by the thickness of plastic walls in bays and openings
  • More experienced modelers with the basic equipment for working with photo-etch
  • Those who build the Do 335 as a display-case piece with the emphasis on detail

The set is an add-on to a plastic kit. The model itself, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a photo-etched detail set, that is an add-on. You have to obtain the Dornier Do 335 A model in 1:48 scale itself separately.

A sharp knife or a scalpel, tweezers, super glue and a working surface. A photo-etch bending tool makes accurate bends much easier; without one a steel rule and a razor blade will help.

Mostly yes. In the places the photo-etch will go, the original molded detail is usually sanded away and the surface trued, so that the metal part seats without a gap.

Look for the number of parts on the box. The set is focused on the bomb bay area and the adjacent structural features.
