A diorama accessory from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:48 scale. It is not a model but equipment for a scene: two wooden Euro pallets that will bring a store, a workshop, an airfield stand, the cargo space of a vehicle or any view in which material is handled to life.
The Euro pallet is a standardized wooden shipping pallet with a footprint of 1200 by 800 millimeters, put together from boards and blocks. In 1:48 scale that comes out at roughly two and a half centimeters on the longer side, so on a base it takes up exactly enough room to be legible without overpowering the main model. Pallets are used indirectly in modeling too - as a support under crates, barrels or an engine block in a workshop scene.
With pallets the wood is the whole point of the accessory, so it pays to give it time. Make the base light beige or gray-beige, not brown - a new board as well as an old one is lighter than one imagines. Create the grain by drawing a very thinned brown paint or oil over the dried base in the direction of the grain and wiping it at once with a cloth, so that it stays only in the unevenness. Vary the individual boards slightly in color; a uniform pallet looks like plastic. Suggest knocked-about corners with a thin dark line and dirty the lower edges with pigment to match the terrain.
Two pieces allow not only a pair standing side by side but also one laid down and one leaning against a wall or loaded. Never stand pallets exactly parallel to the edge of the base. If you load material onto them, leave the load slightly asymmetrical, as perfect straightening looks lifeless.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
