A detail set for models of the supersonic Lockheed F-104 Starfighter fighter in 1:48 scale. It lets you show the space of the cannon armament in the port side of the forward fuselage with the cover swung open, that is the way the aircraft looked during maintenance and ammunition replenishment. It is not an airplane kit but an accessory to a model. The composition of the package, the number of parts and the material are stated on the box of the set.
The F-104 Starfighter is a single-engine supersonic fighter with a very slender fuselage and a short straight wing with a sharp leading edge. On armed versions the gun armament was located in the port side of the forward fuselage, where a 20 mm six-barrel rotary cannon was installed; its mounting takes up a fairly large volume and the access cover is clearly visible on the real aircraft. An open gun bay is among the most rewarding details, because it reveals the internal structure of the fuselage, which is otherwise completely hidden.
Before any cutting into the plastic, dry-fit the parts and mark the outline of the bay with a thin pencil. Wash the resin with warm soapy water because of the mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand it dry with respiratory protection. Paint and pick out the interior of the bay while it is accessible from all sides. The metal components of the weapon stand out with a dark base and a graphite sheen, and the surrounding structure suits a fine wash and discreet traces of oil. Fit the swung-open cover at the very end so that you do not catch it while handling the model. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue).
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
