Responsibility details are not available.
The F/A-18E Super Hornet carrier-based strike fighter looks like an enlarged Hornet, but it is in fact largely a new aircraft. The fuselage grew longer, the wing grew bigger, the leading-edge extensions were enlarged and angular air intakes replaced the rounded shapes of its predecessor. Fuel, range and weapon pylons were all added.
The first flight took place in 1995 and four years later the first combat squadron of the US Navy took the machine on. The Super Hornet gradually replaced several types at once: the lighter Hornets, the heavy Tomcats and carrier-based bombers. In the role of a flying tanker it also passes fuel to the other aircraft of the air wing, so on the deck of a carrier it handles work that used to need three different types.
The cockpit has a large hinged vault with one big part, and with it a windscreen frame, the bulkhead behind the seat and the frame of the head-up display. A large clear area forgives no inaccuracy, because every bleed of paint shows on it at once. The enclosed shapes split the job into several sure steps and the edge of the frame comes out the same all the way round. Covering can be done from outside and from within.
