The F/A-18E Super Hornet is the single-seat version of the American carrier multi-role aircraft. Compared with the older Hornet it is larger and has angular air intakes, so it can be told apart from its predecessor even at a distance. The single-seat form carries the letter E in its designation, the two-seat form the letter F.
On an aircraft model the cockpit is the place the viewer looks at first, and at the same time the place where injection-molded plastic runs into its limits. Etched parts are made of thin metal sheet, so the instrument panel, the side consoles, the levers and the small placards come out in a thickness that cannot be achieved in a mold. In 1:48 scale that difference shows even under a closed canopy. The scope of the particular set is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The parts are held on the carrier sheet by thin tabs. Separate them with a sharp blade on a hard surface, not by twisting, and sand the remains of the tab flat. Make the bends over a straight edge so that they do not come out rounded. Metal is bonded with super glue or a two-part adhesive; polystyrene cement does not hold on it, because it has nothing to soften. Before painting, degrease the parts and go over them with a primer, otherwise the paint will rub off the smooth metal as you handle it. The plastic that the new part replaces usually has to be sanded away first, so that the photo-etch seats flat.
For modelers who are building the Super Hornet in 1:48 scale and want the inside of the cockpit taken all the way in detail. The work is fine, so tweezers and a calm hand come in useful. The kit, paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
