About product

Tupolev Tu-22M2 Backfire-B (1:72, Italeri)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet strategic bomber Tupolev Tu-22M2 (NATO code name Backfire-B) in 1:72 scale from Italeri. It is a sizeable model of a large twin-engine aircraft — the assembled piece is among the biggest in 1:72 scale and calls for matching room both for building and for display. The kit is intended for more experienced modelers; it contains parts on sprues, clear glazing and a decal sheet. Check the exact package contents and the number of marking options against the manufacturer's part number for this item.

The real subject

The Tu-22M was a Soviet long-range bomber and carrier of anti-ship guided missiles with a variable-geometry wing (a swing wing). The Tu-22M2 version was the first variant to enter series service, from the beginning of the 1970s. The aircraft was designed to approach its target fast at supersonic speed, carried a massive weapons load and served with long-range and naval aviation alike. Thanks to its size, its pair of powerful engines and its movable wing it is one of the iconic types of the Cold War.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts from the sprues and glue them with liquid modeling cement for plastic. Paint the cockpit and the clear glazing and bring them out before closing the fuselage, and mask the glazing while spraying. On a model this large take care over a firm bond of the fuselage halves and proper internal bracing. Apply a primer, lay the paint down with an airbrush, apply the decals after a gloss coat and bring out the engraved lines with a wash.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Soviet and Russian Cold War aviation hardware
  • Anyone interested in large bombers and in aircraft with a variable-geometry wing
  • More advanced modelers with experience of building sizeable kits
  • Modelers who have room for a large finished model

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
