The set belongs among aftermarket accessories; it is not a kit of the aircraft. It contains resin wheel castings for a model of the carrier-based F-35C variant in 1:48 scale. A casting differs from a plastic part in that the definition of the tread and the shape of the hub are not limited by the direction in which the mold opens, so the detail stays legible even after the base color has been sprayed on.
The F-35C is the version of the fifth-generation multi-role aircraft intended for operation from aircraft carriers. Compared with the land-based variant it has a greater wing area, folding wing tips, an arrestor hook and a more sturdily engineered landing gear that withstands catapult launches and landings on arrestor wires. The landing gear of carrier machines therefore looks different from the land-based versions and can be told at first glance.
What saves the most work is the order of the steps: first spray the wheel in the dark shade of the tire, once dry cover the tire with a masking disc or liquid mask and only then spray the hub. The reverse order means more laborious touching up. Before painting, wash the mold release agent off the castings, cut off the casting blocks and level the surface. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue. Fit the finished wheels and, before the glue dries, check that the model stands on its base on all points and does not rock.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin castings. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
