1:48 F-4 Phantom II FOD covers are resin covers for the engine intakes of the Phantom II in 1:48 scale, an accessory that gives a standing model the look of a machine genuinely parked up.

This is not an airplane kit but a resin accessory of the Quickboost brand from the Aires family. The abbreviation FOD means foreign object damage; on a real airplane the covers are fitted over the engine intakes so that no debris flies or falls into them while it stands on the ramp. In 1:48 scale these are castings that are simply set into the intakes of a finished model.
On the Phantom the open intakes are large, and without inner ducts the empty fuselage shows up in them in full. Fitted covers solve this problem more elegantly than filling does and at the same time give the model a clear story: the machine is parked, secured and waiting for its next flight. They combine well with a diorama surface, equipment and figures of ground personnel.
Wash the castings first in lukewarm water with a degreaser, so that the mold release agent from the mold disappears. Cut the casting block off with a saw or a fine disc, level the mating surface with wet-sanded paper and try the seating dry as you go, as every model has the intakes dimensioned a little differently. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Painting follows a primer; the covers tend to be in a conspicuous color with lettering and guiding straps, so it pays off to paint them separately and to fit them only onto a finished, varnished model. A fine wash and a light dusting with pigment will tie them in with the rest of the machine.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as a resin casting. Paints, glue and the base kit are not included in the package. We recommend verifying the match with your kit before buying.
