Decals 1:48 for the German F-4F Phantom II with the serial number 37 plus 11 in the farewell finish from Hopsten, December 2005.
Responsibility details are not available.
German Phantoms served for four decades and their departure from the individual bases was each time accompanied by carefully prepared finishes. In December 2005 it was the turn of the wing stationed at Hopsten, and one of the F-4F machines received farewell artwork for the occasion, complete with a playful piece of lettering that swaps the opening letters in the word for a departure flight. The subject of the sheet is exactly this example with the number 37 plus 11.
The F-4F was a lightened export version adapted for the needs of the Luftwaffe, and in later years it went through a modernization of the radar and the armament. Its silhouette with two engines, the drooped tips of the tailplanes and the upturned wingtips transfers very rewardingly into 1:48 scale, because every panel and every piece of service lettering is clearly legible on the model.
Farewell artwork lies on a gray-green camouflage finish and the light elements of the print easily show through on it. It therefore pays to apply a smooth coat of varnish under the larger motifs first and, once dry, to check that no air has stayed under the film. The small lettering can be laid directly; at edges and rows of rivets a thin brush dipped in softener helps.
The sheet is tied to a particular machine and a particular month, so you will not build the standard operational guise of a German Phantom of the 1980s with it. For collectors of the last years of the type's service it is, on the contrary, one of the key items.
