A set of accurately pre-cut self-adhesive painting masks from the Czech maker Eduard for the model of the American carrier-based Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter, the F4F-3 and F4F-4 versions, in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor a model: it is an accessory that makes it easier to paint the canopy glazing and other small areas cleanly. The masks are applied directly to the parts, so the framing of the sliding canopy gets sharp straight edges with no laborious cutting of adhesive tape. Sets of this type usually also include circular masks for the wheel rims, which make it easier to separate the tire from the rim.
The Grumman F4F Wildcat was an American carrier-based fighter, the main machine of the American and British navies in the first years of the war in the Pacific. It had a stocky, barrel-shaped fuselage, a radial engine and manually retracted landing gear. The F4F-3 version carried four machine guns and fixed wings, while the F4F-4 was given folding wings and six machine guns, which made operating from carrier decks easier. Its framed canopy is a typical place to put masks to work.
Lift the mask carefully off the backing with tweezers or the point of a knife and lay it on a dry, degreased surface. Press the edges down carefully so that no paint runs under them. Apply the paint in thin coats, ideally with an airbrush, and pull the mask off before the coat has hardened completely. On strongly curved shapes it helps to back the edge with masking fluid.
This is a set of painting masks, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
