The Fairey Gannet was a British carrier-based aircraft intended for searching out and destroying submarines, operated from aircraft carriers in the 1950s and 1960s. The AS.4 version is a later step of this anti-submarine line. Typical of it is the bulky fuselage with a cockpit for a crew of three, folding wings on account of the hangars on ships, and a retractable radome under the fuselage.
This is a set of photo-etched parts in 1:48 scale. The elements are etched out of thin sheet metal, they are held on it only by small tabs, and they replace details that injection-molded plastic can render only in a simplified way. They are generally used to add to the areas where plastic is thicker than the real subject would call for. The exact extent and the list of parts is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Photo-etched parts are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, because cement for polystyrene does not hold on metal. Cut the tabs through with a sharp blade on a hard surface and sand the mark they leave down. Run the bends over a straight metal edge or in a bender and press evenly along the whole length, so that the part does not ripple. Carry the small elements with tweezers and dose the glue with a pin, because a drop from the tube is too large for them. Wash, degrease and prime bare metal areas before painting, otherwise the finish is easily scuffed off.
The set suits modelers who want to push the level of detail on a kit in 1:48 scale beyond what injection-molded plastic allows and do not mind working with small metal parts.
