The decal sheet is devoted to the German Messerschmitt Bf 110 heavy fighter in the C-3 version in Italian colors and is worked out in 1:48 scale. It is a stand-alone set of decals from the Exotic Decals brand, which concentrates on aircraft in the service of smaller and less documented air forces. The package does not contain the aircraft kit.
Why the theme is interesting
Every modeler knows the Bf 110 in German colors. In the Italian form, though, it is a rare combination that catches the eye at once on a display table and at the same time tells a particular story about the beginnings of night fighter service.
The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was a twin-engined heavy fighter with a crew of two, heavy forward-firing armament and long range. The C-3 version belonged to the early production with DB 601 engines and reworked cannon armament. While the Bf 110 failed as a day fighter over Britain, its size and load-carrying ability made it a suitable basis for night fighting. At the time when the Regia Aeronautica was building a night fighter force of its own, it lacked a type suited to such a task; a small number of German twin-engined machines therefore played the part of a pioneer in its armament.
Dark night camouflage tends to be matte, so do not forget a coat of gloss varnish under the decals, or silvering will appear. Trim excess carrier film as close to the artwork as you can. After applying, use a decal softener; on large areas work bit by bit and blot the surplus water off. At the end, varnish the whole model and even the sheen out. Choose light weathering on night machines, because on a dark surface even a faint layer of dust shows.
