An injection-molded plastic kit of the American carrier fighter FM-1 Wildcat in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Eduard in the ProfiPACK edition. To the plastic it adds pre-painted photo-etched parts and painting masks, and the box holds decals for several color schemes of US Navy and British Fleet Air Arm aircraft. The cockpit is richly broken down and the canopy glazing is clear and thin. The FM-1 was the license-built version of the F4F fighter produced by the automotive group General Motors, which took over production so that Grumman could concentrate on newer types.
The Wildcat was the main carrier fighter of the US Navy in the first years of the war in the Pacific and bore the brunt of the fighting until more capable types replaced it. The stubby fuselage, the narrow track of the hand-cranked landing gear and the rugged structure are characteristic of the Wildcat. The FM-1 differed from Grumman-built machines in detail and flew from the decks of escort carriers over the Pacific and the Atlantic alike.
Use liquid cement for plastic and dry-fit the parts. Glue the pre-painted photo-etch with super glue and paint the glazing through the masks supplied. Spray a primer before painting, lay a gloss clear coat under the decals and even the whole thing out with a matte one. Naval blue-gray camouflage owes its effect to subtle shading and restrained weathering from salt and service.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
