1:48 FM-1 Wildcat landing flaps is an Eduard photo-etched set for rendering the landing flaps faithfully on a model of the Wildcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
This full photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard deals with one particular place on the model: the landing flaps. Plastic flaps tend to be molded as part of the wing and in one piece, so the model can look thick and without structure. The photo-etched parts, by contrast, are thin to scale, have the ribbing drawn out and make it possible to show the flaps in the lowered position. This is an accessory for a model in 1:48 scale, not an aircraft kit; plastic parts, paints and glue are not in the package.
FM-1 Wildcat is the designation carried by the machines built by the Eastern Aircraft division of General Motors, while Grumman concentrated on the successor. It was based on the F4F-4 version but had four machine guns in the wing instead of six, which gave the pilots a longer firing time and the machine a lower weight. The Wildcats served mainly from small escort carriers, where their short take-off run and toughness were valued, and they escorted convoys as well as landing operations. The manually folding wing and the narrow track of the landing gear were among their typical features.
Removing the plastic flaps from the wing is the most demanding part of the job: proceed slowly, cut in layers and take care not to damage the leading edge. Bend the photo-etched parts in a bending tool or over the edge of a hard ruler, in one movement and without working them back and forth, so that the metal does not fatigue. Lowered flaps call for a well worked-out inner side of the wing, so think ahead about how far you want to go. Glue with cyanoacrylate applied in the smallest possible amount.
