About product

Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-8, a 3D printed cockpit 1:48

This is a 3D printed resin cockpit in 1:48 scale with which the cockpit from a plastic kit is replaced. The printing technology allows sharper edges, thinner walls and finer small detail than can be drawn out of an injection mold. The set is intended for experienced modelers: it calls for cutting, sanding and gluing with cyanoacrylate glue. It is not a kit of the aircraft, and the model has to be obtained separately. The maker is the Czech company Eduard.

The real subject

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was a German single-seat fighter aircraft with a BMW 801 radial engine, a wide landing gear track and an unusually roomy cockpit with a good view. The A-8 version was the most numerously produced variant of the whole series; the machines differed in armament and equipment according to the production batch and performed fighter tasks as well as attacks on ground targets. The cockpit of the Fw 190 had an unusually arranged panel and richly detailed side walls, so a great deal is visible in it once the canopy is open, and that is exactly where a detail set shows most.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts away from the print supports with a sharp tool, sand the traces they leave and wash everything in lukewarm soapy water, so that any print resin residue is removed. Do the sanding wet and with respiratory protection. They are glued exclusively with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Always try them dry: the inner walls of the fuselage tend to need thinning, so that the halves can be glued together with no gap. The cockpits of late German fighters were painted a dark gray shade, which takes a black wash and dry brushing well to bring out the levers and the frames.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the Fw 190A-8 in 1:48 who want a cockpit on the level of today's top kits
  • experienced builders used to resin and cyanoacrylate glue
  • models finished with the canopy slid back
  • competition builds, where the detail of the interior is judged

The set is supplied unassembled, unpainted and without the base kit. Glue, paints and the model of the aircraft are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a detail set for the cockpit. The Fw 190A-8 kit in 1:48 scale has to be owned or bought separately.

We recommend it rather to more experienced modelers. The parts are cut away from print supports, sanded and glued with cyanoacrylate glue, which is different work from building in plastic.

Residues of print resin and of the washing medium are left on 3D printed resin. If they are not removed with lukewarm soapy water, neither the primer nor the paint holds well on the surface.

As a rule yes. The original plastic interior is removed and the inner walls of the fuselage tend to need thinning, so that the halves can be glued together with no gap once the new cockpit is in. Always try it dry.
