The Fokker D.VII is a German fighter of the last phase of the First World War and belongs among the best-regarded machines of its day. Its fuselage is welded from steel tubing and covered with fabric, and the wings are cantilever and thick, so it managed without a dense web of bracing wires. The aircraft was known for forgiving mistakes and for staying in the air even at low speed. In the F version it received the inline six BMW IIIa, with which it climbed faster and breathed better at greater altitudes than machines with the older engine.
The span of the real aircraft of just under nine meters gives, in 1:48 scale, a model with a span of around eighteen and a half centimeters and a length of roughly fourteen. The biplane is therefore big enough for the cockpit and the engine bay to be worked up, and at the same time it fits on an ordinary shelf.
With a biplane it is the setting up of the interplane struts that decides the result. Fit the upper wing only once the lower joints have dried, check the symmetry from the front and from above, and glue in small steps. First clear the parts of excess material and of the marks left by production, and sand the mating faces. Typical of this subject is the fabric covering with a lozenge pattern, and transferring it onto the model is the most demanding part of the painting; it is usually solved with a decal sheet rather than by painting. Bracing wires added right at the end give the model its delicacy.
The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, filler and material for the bracing are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
