About product

An engine set for the Fw 190 A-6 in 1:48

The most extensive of the accessories Eduard offers for this German fighter is aimed at the space under the cowling. It makes it possible to build the model with the panels removed and to show the powerplant as it looked during maintenance at a field airfield; besides the engine with its covers it also covers the fuselage armament, which shares the same space. The scope of the work matches that: it is not a quick improvement but an intervention in the build that calls for time and patience.

The radial BMW 801 under the cowling

The powerplant of the Fw 190 A series was the air-cooled twin-row radial engine BMW 801. Its fourteen cylinders in two rows one behind the other called for forced cooling by a fan in front of the engine and a closely fitting cowling, which gave the aircraft its unmistakable robust silhouette. It is precisely the tight installation that is the reason there is so much to see under the cowling: piping, the exhaust stacks led along the sides and the massive engine mount are all crowded one over another in so small a space. On the A-6 version this part of the design stayed identical with the preceding series, and the changes concentrated in the wing and the armament.

An open engine in a scene

Before cutting into the cowling, think out which panels you will leave removed, and use the covers set aside as part of a scene on a base. Paint the engine in groups of parts and assemble it gradually, so that access to the lower areas is kept. Replace the fine piping with thin wire, which can besides be bent into a natural sag.

  • modelers with experience of modifying a fuselage
  • builds with the powerplant opened up

  • competition models with open access panels

This item does not include the kit of the aircraft, paints or glue.

FAQ

For advanced modelers, because it calls for modifying the covers and careful assembly.

The air-cooled twin-row radial BMW 801 with fourteen cylinders in two rows.

The benefit would be minimal, as the whole point lies in opening up the front part of the fuselage.
