The letters after the slash meant a conversion kit, and this one was among the hardest. Weapons of 30 mm caliber were fitted into the outer wings in place of the usual cannon, and their fragmentation shells could break a four-engine machine apart with a few hits. Armored glass and bolted-on plates surrounded the cockpit, because the attack was made from behind and at close range, practically up to the moment of collision. The aircraft paid for all that in agility: machines loaded this way had to have an escort of their own to cover their backs against enemy fighters. From the autumn of 1944 the units that flew this modification could be recognized at a distance by the wide colored bands around the rear fuselage, which served for quick identification over friendly territory.
The envelope deals with the glazing of the cockpit outside and inside and adds two outlines for the national insignia. The shapes are derived from the Tamiya kit.
The white borders of the crosses and the colored identification bands are among the worst covering shades there are. Applied straight onto dark camouflage they run to a dirty gray, and further coats only make the problem worse, because the thickness of the film at the edge increases. Spray a thin coat of light gray into the cut window first, wait until it goes matte, and only then lay on the final shade. Coverage comes after two passes instead of five. The same procedure works on red and yellow areas, where show-through is even more treacherous.
