This is an accessory set, not a model of an aircraft. The SPACE line is a particular kind of decal: the printed layer is not flat as on an ordinary decal but has a real depth. The dials, switches and raised elements thus stand out on the surface and, when looking into the cockpit, cast a shadow of their own. At the same time the set is applied just as easily as a decal, that is without the need to cut small photo-etched parts off or to paint individual instruments with a brush. That is the main reason why this line is sought out even by modelers who do not dare do fine work.

The real subject

The Grumman FM-1 is a carrier-borne fighter aircraft based on the F4F-4 Wildcat design and manufactured in the factories of the General Motors corporation. Against its predecessor it carried four machine guns of 12.7 mm caliber instead of six, which gave the pilots a longer firing time back. The machines served above all from the decks of escort carriers, where their robustness, short takeoff run and undemanding nature proved their worth. The cockpit of the Wildcat is set fairly high and is well lit, so on a model there is seeing into it and it pays to work the interior out.

How to use the set

Work before the fuselage is closed up, while there is free access to the cockpit. The base should be smooth and degreased, ideally gone over with a uniform dark shade, so that plastic showing through does not spoil the coloring. Seat the set and press it down gently, as strong pressure flattens the raised relief. A decal softener will not do the relief any good either: it attacks the printed resin, so leave it out.
