A detail cockpit set in cast resin for models of the Harrier in the GR.1 and GR.1A versions in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Aires. It is not a kit of an aircraft; it is a replacement interior with which the simplified cockpit from a plastic kit is replaced on a model. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts and whether photo-etched or decal elements are present are stated on the box.
On aircraft models the cockpit is the first place everyone looks, and at the same time what injection-molded plastic handles least well. Sets of this type usually replace the whole cockpit tub including the side consoles, the instrument panel, the seat and the controls; parts cast in resin have finer relief on the instruments, thinner walls and crisper edges than an injection mold can manage. Under an open canopy the difference is immediately visible.
The Harrier GR.1 was a British V/STOL combat aircraft in which the thrust of the engine was directed through rotating nozzles. The GR.1A version was an intermediate step in the further development of the type, with a modified powerplant. The cockpit of the first Harriers had conventional analog instrumentation and the characteristic high seating position for the pilot with a good view over the nose.
First wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a razor saw and level the surfaces on wet sandpaper; protect your airways while sanding resin. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and on larger surfaces the gel variant is more suitable. Dry-fit the cockpit tub between the fuselage halves before painting; with resin sets material often has to be removed from the inside of the fuselage. Paint over a primer and bring the instrument panels to life with a dark wash and dry-brushing of the edges.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and the base kit are not included in the package. We recommend checking that it matches your kit before buying.
