About product

The real subject

The He 111Z, with the nickname Zwilling, came about by joining two He 111 bomber airframes with a new center wing section that carried a fifth engine. The Luftwaffe needed a machine that could tow a heavy cargo glider, and joining two aircraft already in production was a quicker route than building a completely new design. The result was an unusually wide aircraft with two fuselages, two crew stations and five engines, of which only a few were built. For a model builder one practical point follows from this: the glazing is twice that of an ordinary He 111, so masking takes twice as long.

What the set contains

Masks for a model in 1:48 scale, cut from kabuki tape. The tape is paper, holds just firmly enough to be lifted without damaging the finish, and conforms well to a curved surface. The BASIC qualifier places the set at the basic level in the supplier's range. Which parts of the glazing, and possibly of the wheels, are covered and in what number is given in the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer.

Building and painting tips

The masks belong on a clean, degreased surface before spraying, not after the paint has dried. Lift the parts off the sheet with the tip of a knife or with tweezers so that the tape does not crease, and press them down around the whole perimeter with a toothpick. An edge that has not settled is the commonest cause of paint running underneath. Spray in thin coats; a heavy coat forms a ridge at the edge of the mask that shows once it is lifted. Take the mask off while the paint is dry to the touch only.

Terms of supply

The masks are supplied on their own. The aircraft kit, paints and glue are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Paper masking tape with a mild adhesive. It holds firmly enough to keep paint from running underneath and still lifts without damaging the finish beneath it.

Before spraying, onto a clean and degreased surface. After spraying they are lifted while the paint is dry to the touch only, not once it has fully cured.

The BASIC qualifier marks the basic level of the supplier's range. The exact extent of the parts is given in the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer.

It is not. The masks are supplied on their own, unless stated otherwise.
