About product

Hauler 1:48 holders for the fuel tanks of the SU-122 and T-34 - photo-etched set

This photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler takes care of the mounts, brackets and securing straps that held the external fuel tanks on the hull sides of the Soviet T-34 and the SU-122 self-propelled gun. The set therefore does not hold the tanks themselves but exactly what fastens them to the hull - a part that in plastic usually looks like a shapeless lump. It is an accessory for a kit in 1:48 scale, not a model.

The real subject

The T-34 and the machines built on its chassis, the SU-122 among them, carried external fuel tanks on the hull sides to extend their range. The tanks were not protected by armor and were fixed into simple brackets, over which metal straps with clamps and nuts held them in place. Crews dealt with them pragmatically: the tanks were taken off, swapped and not infrequently missing altogether - and then only the bare mounts were left in their place.

Building and painting tips

The straps come flat in the set and are only bent around the cylindrical tank on the model. Pre-bend them in small steps so that no sharp kink appears, and keep dry-fitting. Brass in a thin foil is pliable, but repeated bending fatigues it and the part cracks, so bend as little as possible. Degrease the parts with alcohol before painting and cover them with primer. Dose the super glue with a pin. It looks good if you paint the straps along with the hull and fit the tanks last, in a different shade and with a different degree of wear - external tanks were often swapped and did not match the rest of the vehicle in color.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of Soviet T-34 and SU-122 vehicles in 1:48 scale
  • For modelers bothered by coarsely molded plastic tank mounts
  • For diorama builders who want to leave the mounts empty and omit the tanks
  • For more experienced builders - the parts are small and are bent in place

This is an accessory set, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

They are not. According to the name this is about the holders, that is, the mounts and the straps. Use the tanks from the kit or from another accessory set.

Gradually, in small steps and with frequent dry-fitting. Brass takes a limited number of bends, so it pays to get the shape right the first time rather than straightening the part out again and again.

Yes, and it is credible for the period too. Empty holders on the hull side are a detail you rarely see on models, and that is exactly why it draws the eye.

Super glue applied with a pin. Cement for plastic does not hold on brass, because it does not bite into metal.
